It was growing dark when Rae radioed Jack.

“Jack, Mrs. Morrill just called to say her two boys are missing, and their friends say they were last seen playing by the old mill.”

Jack gritted his teeth. “Fucking-A.” He knew Mrs. Morrill’s twin boys, Ethan and John. They were only eight, but curious and rebellious when it came to “No Trespassing” signs.

Memory surged up and Jack narrowed his eyes even as he stepped on the gas and turned on his siren. The old mill. He’d been there several times over the years, both during the day and at night, but never on Halloween, except for that one night years ago. The first time he’d barely been a man. He’d gone in with Travis on a stupid dare. Shit, that was a long time ago. He didn’t remember much of the mill or that night, since he’d been knocked unconscious and when he’d come to, he’d been lying on the sidewalk, Travis sitting beside him.

He was forced to call his father and wait for an ambulance. He’d been busted pretty good, and so had Travis. Then his father scalded his ears after leaving the hospital, angry and worried. That was the moment his father made him choose between pack and his friendship with Travis. Jack had chosen pack. Then he’d grown up and realized he didn’t have to choose at all.

Jack frowned, thinking back. He’d never seen his father so scared. Sure, the mill was closed up and hazardous, but that didn’t explain the terror written so clearly on his father’s face. He hadn’t thought of that night in a long time.

Travis had saved his life then. That night had changed their relationship in so many ways. Where before they’d been strained acquaintances, afterward they’d become friends, though distant because of the pressure from his pack. Travis had lowered the barrier between them, just enough for Jack to see the real Travis. Travis had stopped fighting him over every little thing. And all because of an old mill.

But now it had possibly swallowed up two little boys and that couldn’t stand. Not on his watch.

“Rae, radio Jena. Have her meet me at the mill. Let’s find those boys.”
